Basics
- To get a list of installed packages
`pacman -Qqe`
for all gtk packages
`pacman -Qs gtk`
for gtk version
`pacman -Q gtk`
- To get list of package information including all dependencies it needs
`pacman -Si nodejs`
- downloading build files ie tar.zst
you go to https://archlinux.org/packages/
find the package you want
in the top-right corner of the package's page, you click the download from mirror button, you do that for every package you want
- to get info of package
`pamac info <pkg_name>`
or
`yay -Si <pkg_name>`
- to search repos and aur with keyword
`yay -Ss straw` here straw is keyword
- to not reinstall package use
`yay -S --needed strawberry`
- to get users and group list
https://devconnected.com/how-to-list-users-and-groups-on-linux/
`cat /etc/passwd | cut -d: -f1`
`cat /etc/passwd | awk -F: '{print $1}'`
For connected users:
`who`
or
`users` for less details
For groups
`cat /etc/group`
About its output
first col is group name
sec col : password
3rd: group id
4th: users in the group

- To complete remove packages
`pacman -Rns package_name`
The -Rns flags tell pacman to remove the packages, their configuration files (n), and their unneeded dependencies (s).
- Removing orphan package completely
First, you need to identify the orphaned packages. This can be done using the pacman package manager with the following command:
`pacman -Qdt`
To remove these orphaned packages, you can use the same pacman command with the remove (-R) option:
`pacman -Rns $(pacman -Qdtq)`
- When installing packages from pacman and we dont want any prompt and want the feafult in `[y/n]` then use the flag `--noconfirm`
`pacman -s firefox --noconfirm`

- Reason for low battery life in linux
When a computer is sold with Windows installed, it has ACPI and chipset drivers that can manage the CPU power and overall power consumption. These generally do not exist for Linux, so when the CPU is idle, it is still running the CPU clock at full speed. Similarly, there may be a temperature controlled fan that is dependent on some driver that Linux does not have, so the fan runs at full speed continuously.
Some computers are supported by Linux and will not exhibit this behavior, but by no means is that true in all cases. I am guessing you have one that is not fully supported by Linux for power management. It may just be a matter of finding the right drivers and installing them. Or the driver may not be available for Linux at all.
Things are quite a bit better than when I started out with Linux in 1992, but by no means are manufacturers making Linux drivers available for all the hardware out there. Some do, and if you are primarily interested in Linux on a notebook computer, you need to search out manufacturers that either offer Linux as an option or offer the ability to obtain hardware specific Linux drivers.

- Compressions
When comparing the various compressions, generally the tradeoff is time vs. size. gzip tends to compress and decompress relatively quickly while yielding a good compression ratio. bzip2 is somewhat slower than gzip both in compression and decompression time, but yields even greater compression ratios. LZMA has the longest compression time but yields the best ratios while also having a decompression rate outperforming that of bzip2.

- Hyperbola : arch based distro which is based on linux-libre kernel which is not supported in all machines. It is point based rather then rolling release
- imagemagick : to have image manipulation. one truck is to convert to pdf from images
`convert *.png -auto-orient pictures.pdf`
also for compressing
`convert input.png -define jpeg:extent=200KB output.jpg`
for black png to gray png
`convert icon.png +level-colors "rgb(102,102,102)" -transparent white result.png`

- change lock screen wallpaper
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/howto-change-the-lock-screen-wallpaper-in-manjaro-xfce/112400
Open the `LightDM Gtk+ Greeter: Settings` App from the apps menu
- Better start menu
`pacman -S xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin`
and
in shortcut window found in Keyboard option in set
tings manager add this command
`xfce4-popup-whiskermenu`

- GPU and i/o usage at xfce panel
1. First download these third party plugins ie `radeontop` for amd gpu, `nvidia-smi` for NVIDIA GPUs and `iotop` for disk usage.
2. Make sure that `xfce4-genmon-plugin` is installed. if it isnt then install it.
3. Now in xfce panel , right click -> panel->add new items->generic monitor.
4. After adding right click on this new item and add command for displaying the output.
Command is `radeontop -d - -l 1 | grep -Po "(?<=gpu )([0-9]*\.\d\d\%)"`
`(?<=<pattern>)` this will exclude the gpu part
5. But this command directly wont work. so write a script in .sh file and include its path in command section.
```bash
#!/bin/bash
gpu_percent=$(radeontop -d - -l 1 | grep -Po "(?<=gpu )([0-9]*\.\d\d\%)")
echo " $gpu_percent"
```
- Network usage of individual process
install `nethogs` and `sudo nethogs` . It is a cli tool
- Check firmware age
`hostnamectl`
- To optimize battery use
`tlp`
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CPU_frequency_scaling#Scaling_governors
`sudo cpupower frequency-set -g powersave`
also to disable usb auto suspend go to `micro /etc/tlp.conf` and change `USB_AUTOSUSPEND` to 0 and `remote_pm_on_bat` to on instead of auto and finally do
`sudo tlp start`
- To get information about video product use
`ffprobe <video/audio file name>`
or
`mediainfo <video/audio file name>`
- check video drivers
`lspci | grep VGA`
https://askubuntu.com/questions/28033/how-to-check-the-information-of-current-installed-video-drivers
- check audio drivers
- installing pipewire
`sudo pacman -Syu pipewire pipewire-pulse pipewire-jack pipewire-alsa wireplumber`
- installing pulseaudio
`-Syu pulseaudio jack2`
- check if your u have systemd or not
https://itsfoss.com/check-if-systemd/

- Funny parrot animation

- Handbrake cli
```bash
for file in *.mp4; do
HandBrakeCLI -i "$file" -o "${file%.mp4}_encoded.mp4" --preset="Very Fast 720p30"
done
```
- Changing mirrors
Go to `/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist` and add mirror like
```
# India
Server = https://mirror.albony.xyz/manjaro/stable/$repo/$arch
```
After copying mirror link append `stable/$repo/$arch`. First in the mirrorlist have most priority as priority order is from top to bottom.
Use this site to get list of mirors:
https://repo.manjaro.org/
https://archlinux.org/mirrorlist/all/
- Change relative paths in subdirectories too using bash script for md files
```bash
#!/bin/bash
# Set the old and new paths for the 'resource' folder
old_resource_path="/home/hpes/Videos/imp/joplin_bkps/joplin-04-03-24/_resources/"
file_extension=".md"
# its the base path from where relative path is defined.
# eg: if base path is '/home/user/downloads' and asset is in
# /home/user/assets' then relative path assigned would be '../assets'
BASE_DIR="/home/hpes/Videos/imp/joplin_bkps/joplin-04-03-24/joplin notion extension/Web Development/"
}
Another thing to do is clean up extra copies of packages you don't need:
`pamac clean`
I have pamac set up to keep the last 3 versions of each package, so this will only remove excess packages while maintaining a couple of versions back in case I need to downgrade. I like using this method instead as it will handle flatpacks as well as native packages.
It will install these packages
```
autoconf-2.71-4 automake-1.16.5-2 bison-3.8.2-6 debugedit-5.0-5 flex-2.6.4-5 gc-8.2.4-1 guile-3.0.9-1 m4-1.4.19-3 make-4.4.1-2 patch-2.7.6-10 pkgconf-1.8.1-1 base-devel-1-2
```
To build a package, one must first create a PKGBUILD, or build script, as described in Creating packages. Existing scripts are available from the Arch build system (ABS) tree or the AUR. Once in possession of a PKGBUILD, change to the directory where it is saved and run the following command to build the package:
`makepkg`
- strawberry
[strawberry-qt5-1.0.20-1-x86\_64.pkg.tar.zst](../../_resources/strawberry-qt5-1.0.20-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst)
- nordvpn
Use this command
`pamac install nordvpn-bin`
:: In order to enable nordvpn you have to start the following service:
`sudo systemctl enable --now nordvpnd`
:: You have to add yourself to the nordvpn group:
`sudo gpasswd -a USERNAME nordvpn`
:: You then have to restart for the group to be created:
`reboot`
- offline installation
from tar zst file do this
`sudo pacman -U ./app-name.tar.zst`
`sudo pacman -Sw stacer`
`pamac install -w stacer` : not for AUR
[stacer-1.1.0-1-x86\_64.pkg.tar.zst](../../_resources/stacer-1.1.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst)
- nvm installation
`curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvm-sh/nvm/v0.39.1/install.sh | bash`
`nvm ls-remote` : for getting list of available versions which can be downloaded
`nvm list` : for getting list of downloaded versions of node
`nvm install 14.0.0` : for downloading and installing version 14.0.0
`nvm use 14.0.0` : switching to version 14.0.0
`nvm use system`: switching to version when nodejs first installed
- Checking for missing dependencies
You can check if you have missing files from installed packages, e.g.:
$ `pacman -Qk qemu-system-x86`
qemu-system-x86: 13 total files, 0 missing files
- cloudflare-warp installation
install aur package ie cloudflare-warp-bin then use
`warp-cli`
if facing error ie daemon not running then use this command:
`sudo systemctl enable --now warp-svc.service`
Then
https://blog.cloudflare.com/announcing-warp-for-linux-and-proxy-mode/
```bash
~$ warp-cli register
Success
~$ warp-cli connect
```
- Issues in cd
If it says cd has too many arguments then wrap them in double quotes
`cd "$PATH"`
- Forcing installation no matter if dependency breaks
Use `--nodeps` flag with `pacman -S package_name`
- history expansion issue
When entering command it may be possible that some characters are there that needs to be escaped to avoid undesired results
one such is `!` which is for history expansion. so make sure to escape it with `\!`.
